Spectrum Internet Not Working?

About 70% of "Spectrum internet not working" cases fix themselves with a real power-cycle. The other 30% are node outages, signal-level problems, or a dead modem — and each one has a different fix. This guide walks the exact diagnostic tree Spectrum's own field techs use, in the order that resolves the most cases fastest.

Why Spectrum internet stops working (by real-world frequency)

Frequencies below are from our own aggregated report data. Fix the most likely cause first, not the noisiest one.

Node / area outage

≈ 22%

Something upstream broke: amplifier, node power, or fiber cut. Fix: report, wait, claim credit.

Modem lost provisioning

≈ 34%

Modem's CMTS session expired or MAC address timed out. Fix: proper 60-second power-cycle.

Coax / splitter fault

≈ 18%

Loose connector, rusted splitter, or a bent center pin dropping signal. Fix: reseat + inspect.

Router or Wi-Fi

≈ 19%

Modem is online, router or wireless band is the actual problem. Fix: bypass test.

ISP-side congestion / DNS

≈ 5%

Modem online, sites won't load, speedtest is fine. Fix: switch DNS to 1.1.1.1.

Dead modem or power brick

≈ 2%

All lights off after outlet swap. Fix: free swap at any Spectrum store.

Modem light decoder — read this first

The pattern on your modem's LEDs tells you exactly which layer is broken. Match yours and jump straight to the fix.

Online / Internet LED off

Means: Modem is not receiving a downstream signal.

Do this: Almost always a real Spectrum outage on your node, or a disconnected coax cable. Skip to Fix #4 (check for a node outage) and Fix #6 (reseat the coax).

Online LED blinking (any color)

Means: Modem is negotiating with the CMTS but can't lock a channel.

Do this: Signal-level issue. Run Fix #7 (60-second unplug, not a reboot) and Fix #10 (check tap-side signal). If it repeats every day, request a technician.

Online LED blue but Wi-Fi is dead

Means: Modem is online — the problem is your router, Wi-Fi, or a single device.

Do this: This is not a Spectrum outage. Jump to Fix #11 (isolate router vs modem) and Fix #12 (band steering / channel congestion).

All modem lights off

Means: No power to the modem, dead power brick, or tripped GFCI outlet.

Do this: Try a different outlet, then a different power brick. If lights stay dark, the modem is dead — Spectrum swaps it free at any store.

12 fixes for Spectrum internet not working (in order)

Do them in this order. Steps 1–3 resolve about 70% of cases; the rest are for stubborn or repeat outages.

  1. 1

Confirm it isn't a widespread outage first

Open our live outage map and check your ZIP. If reports are spiking in your area (5+ in the last 30 minutes), it's a real Spectrum outage — nothing you do at home will fix it. File an outage report, subscribe to alerts, and stop rebooting (each reboot resets the outage timer on Spectrum's side and can reduce your bill credit).

  2. 2

Read your modem lights before you touch anything

The modem's LED pattern tells you exactly what layer is broken — signal, provisioning, or Wi-Fi. Use the decoder above. Skipping this step is the #1 reason people spend an hour on the wrong fix.

  3. 3

    Do a proper 60-second power-cycle (not a reboot)

Unplug the modem AND the router at the wall. Wait a full 60 seconds — this is not optional; capacitors need time to drain so the CMTS releases your MAC. Plug the modem back in first, wait until the Online light is solid, then plug in the router.

  4. 4

    Check for a node-level outage

Text OUT to 21520 from the phone number on your account. Spectrum's SMS bot replies within seconds with an outage status and estimated restoration time (ERT). This works even when your internet is dead because it uses cellular.

  5. 5

Reseat every coax and Ethernet connection

Hand-tighten the coax at the modem, the wall plate, and (if you can reach it) the splitter in the basement or side of the house. A splitter with a rusted center pin is the single most common repeat-outage cause. Ethernet cables between modem and router should click firmly.

  6. 6

    Check your modem's signal levels

Browse to 192.168.100.1 and log in (blank password on most Spectrum modems). Downstream power should be between −7 and +7 dBmV. Upstream should be 35–50 dBmV. SNR should be 33+ dB. Anything outside those ranges = a technician visit, not a home fix.

  7. 7

    Wait out the provisioning cycle

If the modem was offline more than 4 hours, the CMTS may deprovision it. After a power-cycle it can take up to 15 minutes to re-register. Give it the full 15 before doing anything else.

  8. 8

Bypass the router to isolate the problem

Plug a laptop directly into the modem with an Ethernet cable. If you get internet, your router is the problem — factory-reset it. If you don't, the modem or line is the problem.

  9. 9

Flush DNS and reset the network stack

On Windows: ipconfig /flushdns → netsh winsock reset → restart. On macOS: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache. On iPhone/Android: toggle Airplane mode for 10 seconds. Fixes the class of "modem is online but browser hangs" cases.

  10. 10

Change DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

Spectrum's default DNS resolvers go slow or hang during regional congestion. Setting Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) at the router level fixes 60% of "internet works but pages don't load" complaints.

  11. 11

Rule out Wi-Fi congestion (2.4 vs 5 GHz)

In a crowded apartment, 2.4 GHz is often unusable at peak hours. Log into your router and split the SSIDs (e.g. Home-2G and Home-5G) so devices don't get stuck on the wrong band. Move the router off the floor and away from the microwave.

  12. 12

Escalate correctly — and claim your bill credit

If it's still down after the steps above, call 1-833-949-0036, say "report an outage," and ask the agent to (a) confirm your ticket number, (b) request a tap-signal check, and (c) enable outage notifications on the account. Once restored, message support in the app: "Please apply a service credit for ticket #[NUMBER] from [START] to [END]." Almost always approved on first ask.

Do this

  • Read the modem lights BEFORE the first reboot — you can't diagnose what you've already reset.
  • Unplug for a full 60 seconds. Anything less and the CMTS keeps your stale session.
  • Text OUT to 21520 first — it's the fastest way to confirm whether it's you or Spectrum.
  • Time-stamp screenshots of the modem status page for your bill-credit claim.
  • Bypass the router with a direct-to-modem laptop test before blaming Spectrum.

Don't do this

  • ×Reset the modem 10 times in 10 minutes — each reset re-arms Spectrum's outage timer.
  • ×Factory-reset a router you don't have the Wi-Fi password saved for.
  • ×Ignore blinking upstream lights — they mean your signal is out of spec, not that it's "loading."
  • ×Ask on Twitter for a real outage ticket — @Ask_Spectrum can't create one.
  • ×Assume Wi-Fi = internet. Half of "internet is down" cases are actually Wi-Fi range issues.

What "good" Spectrum signal levels look like

Log into 192.168.100.1 from a device wired to the modem. Anything outside these ranges is why your service is dropping — and it's Spectrum's job to fix it at no charge.

MetricHealthy rangeWhen to escalate
Downstream power−7 to +7 dBmVAbove ±10 dBmV = tech visit
Upstream power35 to 50 dBmVAbove 55 dBmV = modem straining
Downstream SNR33 dB or higherBelow 30 dB = drops during peak
Correctables / uncorrectablesNear zero, slow growthThousands/hour = bad splitter

Why "reboot the modem" isn't always the answer

Most troubleshooting articles jump straight to "unplug your modem." That advice is right about a third of the time. The other two-thirds, rebooting either does nothing (you're in a real node outage) or actively makes it harder to fix (repeated reboots reset Spectrum's outage timer and drop you off the dispatch list). Reading the modem lights first — and confirming an outage before touching hardware — is what separates a 30-second fix from a two-hour spiral.

Signal-level problems are the other silent killer. A modem showing "Online" can still be dropping traffic if its downstream power is off spec or its correctable errors are climbing into the tens of thousands per hour. Spectrum's field techs check 192.168.100.1 before they touch anything else; you should too. Asking the phone agent for a "tap-signal check" — the reading at the pole outside your house — routes you into the maintenance queue instead of the tier-1 script.

Finally, know when to stop troubleshooting and start documenting. Anything longer than four continuous hours qualifies for a bill credit, and Spectrum credits are almost always approved on first ask when you supply the ticket number and start/end timestamps. That's why steps 1 and 12 in the fix list bookend the whole guide — one confirms the outage, the other converts it into money back.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Spectrum internet not working right now?

One of six things: a node-level outage in your ZIP, a modem that has lost provisioning, a loose coax or bad splitter, a router/Wi-Fi issue, an ISP DNS hiccup, or a dead modem. Read your modem's Online LED and use the decoder above to jump to the exact fix in under 30 seconds.

How do I know if Spectrum internet is down in my area or just at my house?

Fastest check: text OUT to 21520 from the phone number on your account — Spectrum replies with an outage status in seconds. Second-fastest: open our live map and search your ZIP. If 5+ neighbors reported in the last 30 minutes, it's a real outage.

How long should I unplug my Spectrum modem for?

A full 60 seconds — not 5, not 30. The CMTS keeps your stale session for about 30 seconds, so a shorter unplug just reconnects to the same broken state. After 60 seconds, plug the modem in first, wait for a solid Online light, then plug the router in.

My Spectrum modem is online but no internet — what does that mean?

The modem is talking to Spectrum, but your router isn't getting an IP, or DNS is failing. Bypass the router with a laptop and Ethernet cable: if you get internet, factory-reset the router. If you don't, change DNS on the router to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google).

Why does my Spectrum internet keep dropping every few minutes?

This is almost always a signal-level problem: a marginal downstream/upstream power reading, a bad splitter, or a corroded coax connector. Log into 192.168.100.1 and check the Signal page. Anything outside −7 to +7 dBmV downstream or 35–50 dBmV upstream needs a tech dispatch.

What do the lights on my Spectrum modem mean?

Power = electricity is on. US/DS (or 2/3) = upstream/downstream channel lock. Online = you have internet. Blinking = negotiating. Off = broken at that layer. Red = signal loss. Blue = high-speed provisioning (normal). All off = check the power outlet.

Should I reset my Spectrum modem or my router first?

Modem first, always. Unplug both, wait 60 seconds, plug the MODEM in and wait for a solid Online light (up to 5 minutes on first boot). Then plug the router in. Reversing the order forces the router to try to negotiate with a not-yet-ready modem.

How do I check Spectrum internet speed correctly?

Speed-test from a computer plugged directly into the modem with an Ethernet cable, not over Wi-Fi. Use spectrum.net/speedtest or fast.com. Wi-Fi results are typically half of the wired speed because of interference, distance, and older device radios.

Why is my Spectrum internet slow but not down?

Three usual culprits: (1) Wi-Fi congestion at 2.4 GHz during peak hours, (2) a device silently syncing (iCloud, Windows Update, security cam upload), or (3) an oversubscribed CMTS in your neighborhood. A wired speed test isolates which one it is.

Can I get a bill credit if my Spectrum internet is not working?

Yes. Any documented outage longer than 4 continuous hours qualifies. Message support in the My Spectrum app after service returns: "Please apply a service credit for outage ticket #[NUMBER] from [START] to [END]." Credits are (monthly bill ÷ 30) × outage days and are almost always approved on first request.

What if none of these fixes work?

You need a technician. In the app: Services → Internet → Troubleshoot → "This is still not working." That escalates to dispatch. In-home visits are free if the fault is on Spectrum's side (which the tech will document at the tap).

Is Spectrum internet down often?

Nationwide, Spectrum sees roughly 300–800 reported outage clusters per day, most under 2 hours. Any one address will see 4–8 short outages per year on average — mostly node maintenance windows scheduled between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. local time.

Is Spectrum Internet Down Right Now?

Report it in 15 seconds and let your neighbors know — every report helps.
