How the spike detector works
Every user-submitted Spectrum outage report is written to our database and evaluated against a rolling 15-minute window for its ZIP code. When that window contains 5 or more reports, the ZIP is flagged as a genuine node-level or regional event — not just individual equipment failures. A dedup key (spike:zip:<zip>:<30-min bucket>) prevents duplicate alerts. Only then do we fan out Web Push and email to matching subscribers.

How do Spectrum outage alerts work?
When 5 or more Spectrum outage reports land in the same ZIP code within a 15-minute window, our server fires a real Web Push notification (via VAPID + the browser Push API) to every device subscribed to that ZIP or state. Notifications include the city, ZIP, report count, and a one-tap link to the live map.
Are these real notifications or a marketing gimmick?
Real. They use the same W3C Push API that Google Chat, Slack, and Twitter/X use — end-to-end encrypted with your device's own key pair, delivered by Google/Mozilla/Apple push endpoints, gated by an explicit browser permission prompt. Nothing is faked and no promotional content is ever sent.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Push notifications work directly from your browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Brave, Samsung Internet, and Safari 16.4+ on iOS (once you've added the site to your home screen). Enable once and you'll get alerts even when the browser is closed.
Will I get spammed?
No. We only send when your ZIP genuinely spikes, and we deduplicate to at most one alert per 30-minute window per ZIP. If nothing is wrong, you'll hear nothing. That's the whole point of a spike-based trigger instead of a scheduled digest.
How do I turn alerts off?
Click the 'Turn off push' button on this page or in any ZIP page's alert card. You can also revoke permission from your browser's site settings. Removal is instant and we mark your subscription disabled server-side within seconds.
Is my location or email shared?
No. Your push endpoint is stored server-side only to deliver alerts for your chosen ZIP or state — it is never sold, shared, or used for advertising. Email is used only for the outage alert you opted into and is deletable on request.
Why didn't I get an alert during a recent outage?
Three usual causes: your ZIP didn't cross the 5-in-15 threshold; you never enabled notifications on this device; or your OS-level notification permission for the browser was off. Use the 'Send test notification' button after enabling to confirm delivery works.
Does iOS support this?
Yes, on iOS 16.4 and later. You must first add spectrumoutagemap.net to your Home Screen (Share → Add to Home Screen), then open the icon and enable alerts from there — Apple only allows Web Push on installed PWAs on iPhone.
