Is Spectrum Wi-Fi down in your area?

60-second self-diagnostic
- Look at your modem lights. The "online" or "internet" light should be solid. If it's off or blinking, Spectrum's network isn't reaching your modem — this is not a Wi-Fi problem.
- Try a wired connection. Plug a laptop directly into the modem or router with an Ethernet cable. If wired works, your Wi-Fi radio is the problem (reboot the router). If wired also fails, the internet itself is down.
- Check one other device. If only one device is offline, that device's Wi-Fi driver is the culprit — restart it or forget/rejoin the network.
The correct reboot sequence
Order matters and most people get it wrong. Do it exactly like this:
- Unplug both the modem and the router from power.
- Wait a full 60 seconds. This lets Spectrum's DHCP server release your old lease.
- Plug the modem back in first. Wait until every status light is solid (usually 2–3 minutes).
- Now plug the router back in. Wait another 2 minutes for Wi-Fi to come up.
When to replace vs. reboot
A modem or router more than 4 years old is past its reliable service life. If you're rebooting more than once a month, or if your speeds are consistently below 70% of your plan on a wired connection, the equipment is the problem — not Spectrum. Rented Spectrum gear will be swapped for free at any Spectrum store. Owned equipment is usually cheaper to replace than to keep fighting.
Requesting a bill credit
Spectrum will credit your bill for confirmed outages, but you have to ask. Call 833-949-0036 or open a case in the My Spectrum app, reference the outage start and end time from our outage timeline, and ask for a prorated service credit. Credits post within one billing cycle.

Is Spectrum Wi-Fi down right now?
Spectrum's Wi-Fi service depends on the same cable network that carries their internet, so a genuine Wi-Fi outage is almost always an internet outage. Check the live map on our home page — if your city shows a spike in reports in the last 30 minutes, it's a network-side issue, not your router. Otherwise it's almost certainly local to your home.
Why does my Spectrum Wi-Fi keep disconnecting?
The three most common causes are: 1) modem/router firmware that hasn't been rebooted in weeks (unplug it for 60 seconds), 2) 2.4 GHz interference from neighbors, microwaves, and baby monitors — switch clients to the 5 GHz SSID, and 3) an aging router (Spectrum's rented equipment typically loses reliability after ~3 years). Replace or reboot before assuming it's Spectrum's fault.
How do I fix Spectrum Wi-Fi that's connected but has no internet?
This means your device is talking to the router but the router can't reach Spectrum. Power-cycle the modem and router (unplug both, wait 60 seconds, plug the modem back in first, wait 2 minutes, then the router). If it still fails, check the modem's status light — if it's off or blinking, the issue is on Spectrum's side.
Should I use Spectrum's router or my own?
Bring your own if you can. Spectrum's rented router costs $5–$10/month and is usually a mid-tier consumer device. A $150 Wi-Fi 6 router (TP-Link, Asus, or Netgear) will pay for itself in about 18 months and typically delivers 20–40% better throughput and range.
How many devices can Spectrum Wi-Fi handle?
Spectrum's stock routers comfortably handle 20–25 active devices before performance degrades. Above that you'll want a mesh system (eero, Google Nest Wi-Fi, or Orbi). Bandwidth is not the limiting factor — it's the number of simultaneous Wi-Fi radio negotiations the router can juggle.
Why is my Spectrum Wi-Fi slower than my plan?
Wi-Fi almost always tests slower than a wired connection. On a 300 Mbps plan, expect 200–250 Mbps over 5 GHz Wi-Fi at close range, and 50–100 Mbps over 2.4 GHz across the house. If wired speeds are also low, run the speed test on the tools page and check for signal issues; if wired is fine and Wi-Fi is bad, the router is the bottleneck.
