Spectrum Router Blinking Red
A blinking red light on a Spectrum router means one thing: the router thinks the internet isn't there. Either the modem behind it is offline, the Ethernet cable between them is bad, or Spectrum's network is genuinely down.
Diagnose in 5 minutes
- Check the modem lights first. Ignore the router entirely for a moment. If the modem's 'online' or 'internet' light is off or blinking, the problem is upstream of the router.
- Reseat the Ethernet cable between modem and router. Unplug both ends, plug them back in firmly. A loose connection here is the #1 cause of red-blink.
- 60-second reboot. Unplug modem AND router, wait 60 seconds, plug modem in first, wait 2 minutes, then router.
- Check the outage map. If nearby ZIPs are also spiking, it's a real outage — nothing to do but wait.
If the modem is online but router is still red
The Ethernet cable is bad, the router's WAN port is fried, or the router itself is dying. Test with a different Ethernet cable. If a new cable works, the old one was bad (surprisingly common — connectors wear out). If new cable also fails, the router is dying. Swap it at any Spectrum store — free rental replacements take 10 minutes.
Solid red vs. blinking red
Solid red on most Spectrum routers means catastrophic hardware failure — the router is done. Blinking red means 'trying but failing to reach internet.' Blinking is fixable; solid usually means replacement.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I leave it unplugged?
60 seconds minimum. Less than that and the DHCP lease doesn't fully release. More than 5 minutes doesn't help.
Does blinking red mean my router is broken?
Not necessarily. Most of the time the modem is offline or the cable is loose. Only assume the router is broken after confirming the modem is online and the cable is good.
