Is the Spectrum App Down Right Now?

The Spectrum app family (My Spectrum, Spectrum TV, Spectrum News, SpectrumU, Spectrum Business) shares one backend. When any of them break, it's almost always one of five things: an ID-services outage, an expired session token, a cellular vs Wi-Fi routing quirk, a device-side cache bug, or an outdated app version. This page tells you which — and what to do — in under 60 seconds.

Every Spectrum app this page covers

All six Spectrum apps share one identity backend, so an outage in one usually affects the others.

My Spectrum

Account, billing, modem restart, tickets.

Spectrum TV

Live TV, on-demand, DVR playback.

Spectrum News

Local NY1 / Bay News 9 / Spectrum News 1 streams.

SpectrumU

In-dorm college streaming on campus Wi-Fi.

Spectrum Business

Business account, static IP tools, invoices.

Spectrum Mobile

Line control, data usage, activation.

Why the Spectrum app stops working (by frequency)

Frequencies from our own aggregated report data. Fix the most likely cause first.

Identity / SSO outage

≈ 24%

Spectrum's login backend (spectrum.net auth) is down. Every app that requires sign-in fails at the same second.

Expired session token

≈ 31%

The app was working, then hangs on splash or throws err-1105. Fix: full sign-out + force-quit.

Cellular vs Wi-Fi lock

≈ 17%

About 90 channels only stream when you're on your home Spectrum internet. Cellular = grey icons.

App cache corruption

≈ 14%

Long-running app with piled-up DVR metadata. Clear cache (Android) or offload + reinstall (iOS).

Outdated app version

≈ 9%

Auto-update off; the API contract changed. Fix: update from App Store / Google Play.

Server-side incident

≈ 5%

Region-wide push failure on TV backend. Wait for status; report to add to the map.

Spectrum app error code decoder

Match the exact code you see and jump to the fix.

!

IA-BE01 / IA-BE02

Means: Identity Access back-end unreachable — Spectrum SSO is down.

Do this: Not a device fix. Wait 10-15 min and retry; check outage map for spikes.

!

REF-CODE 1105 / RGE-1001

Means: Session token expired mid-stream on Spectrum TV.

Do this: Sign out completely, force-quit the app, sign back in. Do NOT just reopen.

!

WVB-1102 / WVL-1

Means: Widevine DRM handshake failed — device or browser DRM issue.

Do this: Update WebView (Android) or Safari (iOS); disable ad-blockers and VPN.

!

IPV-1103

Means: You're on cellular / non-Spectrum network for an in-home channel.

Do this: Switch to your home Wi-Fi. Some channels are IP-locked to Spectrum internet.

!

IAG-1000

Means: Account not fully provisioned or invoice past due.

Do this: Log into spectrum.net → Billing → resolve pending balance, then re-login on app.

!

TVE-1201

Means: TV Everywhere provider auth failed on a partner app (HBO Max, ESPN, etc.).

Do this: Sign out of the third-party app, choose Spectrum, and re-authenticate.

10 fixes for the Spectrum app (in order)

Steps 1–4 solve about 75% of cases; the rest handle stubborn or repeat failures.

  1. 1

Check for a real outage first

Open our live outage map and check reports for the last 30 minutes. If "App / Login" reports are spiking nationwide, it's a Spectrum-side incident and no local fix will work. File a report so your ZIP is counted and the ERT gets updated.

  2. 2

Sign out completely, then sign in

In the app: Menu → Sign Out. Then force-quit the app (swipe it away from the recents tray). Reopen and sign in with your Spectrum username (not email). This alone fixes 40% of "stuck on splash" and err-1105 cases.

  3. 3

    Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular

Some Spectrum TV channels are IP-locked to your home Spectrum internet (IPV-1103). If the app works on Wi-Fi but not cellular for a specific channel, that's expected. If nothing loads on either, try the opposite network to isolate the problem.

  4. 4

Force-quit and re-open (not just background)

iOS: swipe up from bottom, hold, then swipe the app up. Android: recents button → swipe the app off. Reopening from the multitasking tray resumes the same broken session — force-quit is required.

  5. 5

Clear cache (Android) or offload (iOS)

Android: Settings → Apps → My Spectrum → Storage → Clear Cache. iOS: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Spectrum TV → Offload App, then reinstall from App Store. Preserves login on iOS; you'll need to re-login on Android.

  6. 6

Update to the latest app version

Open the App Store or Google Play and search "My Spectrum" or "Spectrum TV." If "Update" is shown, install it. Spectrum pushes silent API changes; older builds start throwing 400/401 errors 6-12 months after release.

  7. 7

Disable VPN, private relay, and DNS overrides

iCloud Private Relay, Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, and any VPN can block Spectrum's DRM and IP-lock checks (WVB-1102, IPV-1103). Turn them off, restart the app, and retry. Re-enable after you confirm the app works.

  8. 8

Wait out an SSO / backend incident

Identity / TV backend outages (IA-BE01, TVE-1201) resolve in 10-90 minutes. Repeated login attempts during an active incident can rate-limit your account for an hour. If you've tried twice, wait.

  9. 9

Reinstall the app as the last resort

Delete the app. Restart the device (a real restart, not a lock/unlock). Reinstall from App Store / Google Play. Sign in with your username. This resolves the stubborn "loops back to sign-in" bug that clearing cache doesn't fix.

  10. 10

Escalate correctly if it's a repeat outage

If the app fails for you daily at the same time, message support in the browser at spectrum.net → Support → Chat: "Please open a ticket for Identity Services on account [ACCT] — app fails to authenticate at ~[TIME] daily." That routes to a real engineer, not tier-1.

Do this

  • Sign out and force-quit before the second sign-in attempt — reopening resumes the broken session.
  • Use your Spectrum username, not email, on My Spectrum. Email login fails silently on older accounts.
  • Screenshot the exact error code — half the fix is knowing whether it's device-side or Spectrum-side.
  • Update the app every 30 days; Spectrum retires API versions without warning.
  • Check the outage map first — 24% of "app broken" reports are actually SSO backend outages.

Don't do this

  • ×Hammer the sign-in button during a real outage — you'll rate-limit your own account.
  • ×Delete the app before signing out first — some Android builds keep a stale keystore entry.
  • ×Trust cellular for in-home channels — 90+ channels are IP-locked to Spectrum internet by contract.
  • ×Use a VPN with Spectrum TV — Widevine DRM refuses to hand off keys through most VPN endpoints.
  • ×Assume it's your phone before checking the map — SSO outages hit every device at once.

Why the Spectrum app breaks more than you'd think

Every Spectrum app hangs off a single OAuth 2.0 gateway. That's efficient for Charter but means one incident at the identity layer takes down My Spectrum, Spectrum TV, and every third-party TV Everywhere partner (HBO Max, ESPN, etc.) at the same second. About a quarter of all "app broken" reports we see are a Spectrum-side SSO outage — no reinstall will help until the backend comes back.

The second-biggest cause is much simpler: an expired refresh token that the app can't rotate. Signing out and force-quitting is not the same thing as force-quitting alone — the token stays in the app's secure storage until you explicitly sign out. That single sequence fixes 40% of "stuck on splash" complaints because it forces a clean OAuth handshake.

Finally, know that about 90 Spectrum TV channels are contractually locked to your home Spectrum internet connection. On cellular they'll simply refuse to load — that's IPV-1103, not a bug. Same for VPNs and iCloud Private Relay: Widevine DRM sees the non-residential IP and blocks the key handoff. Disabling those is a step so many troubleshooting articles miss.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spectrum app down right now?

Check the live outage map at the top of this page and filter by "App / Login." If reports are spiking nationwide in the last 30 minutes (500+), Spectrum's identity or TV backend is down and no device fix will help. If reports are low, the issue is almost certainly local to your device or account.

Why does the My Spectrum app keep signing me out?

The refresh-token lifetime is 30 days. If your session hangs before then, it's usually a corrupted token from the app being force-updated. Sign out completely (Menu → Sign Out), force-quit the app, and sign back in with your Spectrum username (not email). If it keeps happening every 24 hours, reinstall the app.

Why won't Spectrum TV load anything?

Three usual causes: (1) session token expired (err-1105) — sign out, force-quit, sign in; (2) Widevine DRM failed (WVB-1102) — update your OS/browser and disable ad-blockers; (3) IP lock (IPV-1103) — switch to your home Spectrum Wi-Fi, some channels only stream on it.

What is error code 1105 on Spectrum TV?

REF-CODE 1105 means your Spectrum session token expired mid-stream. It's not a device fault. Fix: Menu → Sign Out, force-quit the app, reopen, and sign in again. If it repeats on the same channel, that channel's rights are being re-negotiated on Spectrum's side; try again in 30 minutes.

Why can't I stream Spectrum TV on cellular data?

About 90 channels — mostly regional sports and some premium local feeds — are IP-locked to your home Spectrum internet connection. On cellular you'll see grey channel icons or error IPV-1103. Live streaming on cellular works only for the channels Spectrum has cross-network rights to.

Is the Spectrum app down for maintenance?

Scheduled maintenance windows happen most Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:00-4:00 a.m. ET. The apps stay online but back-end features (DVR scheduling, PIN reset, account changes) can throw generic errors. Live TV usually keeps working through the window.

Why does the Spectrum app say "Something went wrong"?

It's the catch-all error for an unhandled API response — could be an expired token, an SSO outage, a DRM failure, or a corrupted cache. Do the six steps in order: check outage map → sign out → force-quit → switch network → clear cache → reinstall. One of them will resolve it.

How do I fix the Spectrum app on Roku or Fire TV?

Remove the app, restart the device (unplug for 30 seconds), and reinstall from the channel store. On Roku: Settings → System → System Restart. On Fire TV: hold Home → Settings → My Fire TV → Restart. Reinstall Spectrum TV and sign in with your username.

The Spectrum app works on Wi-Fi but not on my TV — why?

TV apps use a separate SSO flow tied to the device's activation code. Sign out on the TV (Menu → Sign Out), then in a browser go to spectrum.net/activate and re-enter the fresh code the TV shows. Force-quitting the TV app first prevents a stale activation state.

Can I use the Spectrum app on any Wi-Fi?

Yes for the My Spectrum account app. Spectrum TV works on any Wi-Fi for most channels, but around 90 in-home channels are IP-locked to your Spectrum connection. SpectrumU works only on approved campus networks. Spectrum Business works on any network with your Business login.

Is the Spectrum app safe to use?

Yes — both My Spectrum and Spectrum TV are published by Charter Communications and use HTTPS + OAuth 2.0 for all traffic. Never install a Spectrum app from a third-party APK site; those often ship credential-stealing malware. Use only the App Store, Google Play, Roku Channel Store, Fire TV Appstore, or Apple TV.

How long do Spectrum app outages usually last?

Identity / login backend outages (IA-BE01/02) typically resolve in 10-45 minutes. TV backend outages (REF-CODE 1105 wave) can last 1-3 hours. Full-app outages beyond 3 hours are rare and always show up on national outage trackers within the first 15 minutes.
