Why it takes so long to come back

During a wide-area power outage, every Spectrum modem in your neighborhood drops off. When power restores, they all boot at once and try to negotiate a fresh DHCP lease from Spectrum's regional servers. Those servers get temporarily overwhelmed — a modem that would normally get online in 60 seconds might take 15–20 minutes.

This is normal. Do not power-cycle the modem repeatedly — that just puts you back at the end of the queue.

The correct restart sequence

1. Wait 5–10 minutes after power comes back before doing anything.
2. If still offline: unplug modem AND router. Wait 60 seconds.
3. Plug modem in first. Wait for all lights solid (up to 5 minutes during a mass event).
4. Plug router in. Wait 2 more minutes.
5. If STILL offline after step 4, check the live outage map — a widespread power event often triggers Spectrum-side infrastructure failures too.

Cable box after power loss

Your cable box needs to re-download the program guide and channel map after any power loss — this takes 5–15 minutes. During that time you may see a black screen or 'Please wait' message. Don't press buttons; let it finish.
