Spectrum Internet Connected But Not Working
Your device says it's connected to Wi-Fi but pages won't load. This is different from a full outage — the local connection works, but something between your router and the internet is broken.
First, isolate the layer
- Try loading a website by IP address in your browser: `http://1.1.1.1` — if this loads, your DNS is the problem. Change your device's DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.
- If IP address also fails, try a wired connection. If wired works, your router is the issue.
- If wired also fails, the modem or Spectrum's network is the issue. Check the modem's online light.
The five most common causes
DNS server issue — Spectrum's DNS occasionally has hiccups. Fix: change device DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).
IPv6 misconfiguration — some Spectrum routers hand out broken IPv6. Fix: disable IPv6 on the device or router as a test.
DHCP lease expired — the router thinks you have an IP but Spectrum doesn't recognize it. Fix: reboot modem then router.
Router has an IP but no gateway — device says 'no internet' immediately. Fix: forget the network and rejoin.
Captive portal on public Wi-Fi mistakenly saved — device tries to auth against a portal that doesn't exist on your home network. Fix: forget the network.
When it's just one device
If only one device says 'connected, no internet' and other devices work fine, the device's Wi-Fi driver or IP config is stuck. Forget the network, restart the device, rejoin. Fixes 95% of one-device cases.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone say connected but no internet on Wi-Fi?
Almost always a DNS or captive-portal cache issue on the phone. Forget the network and rejoin. If that fails, restart the phone.
Should I change DNS to Google or Cloudflare?
Yes if Spectrum's DNS is flaky. Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) is generally faster and more private; Google (8.8.8.8) is reliable but Google logs queries.
